Lost in time .. lost wallet
I think blogging is almost not for me for the fact that it has been about 4 months since I last wrote. Many things had happened in between, among which worth mentioning was ... almost nothing ... except that I have been enjoying my nephew Derrick who is a future eng-tao-ba and I also managed to land a new job at a CA office, pass my G driving test and attend a concert (yay!!!). I am glad that my new colleague at work is a nice person and a food person which means there is endless supply of refreshment in the pantry and every few hours is snack time. I am going to blog separately about the concert as I have got videos to post. Now, talking about my driver's license ... I lost it (and all others) in an incident just two days ago ... which was 2 days to the ending of year 2008. Some stupid bastard stole my wallet! I am still fuming with rage. It happened, I was coming off work, walked into a bank, took money out from atm, crossing the street towards the subway station and just like that my wallet was snatched away from me by someone coming from behind. And the worst part is, he actually got away with my favorite wallet!! I curse the day this stupid person was born. Until now, the image of my wallet being snatched away keeps replaying in my mind. It is unimaginable how a person could be so mean he did not even drop my wallet even after I chased after him and called out to him to drop just the wallet. But what done was done. Whoever this person is, he is a disgrace to this society and to the world. I don't even have a picture to remember my wallet by *sob*.

Well, back to happy mode. The best thing is all this while, I have been enjoying Derrick. He is growing every day and he is looking guuuddd!!

Supercute ...

Sunbathing pose ... :D How can one not love him?

Herein wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2009

Baby Derrick
I know I promised to blog about cooking one of these days. But these days, I don't really feel like blogging about food. Please forgive me, Fin.

Here, I just want to post up pictures of little baby Derrick, my oh-so-cute-nephew Derrick.

This is what he looked like when he first came on board :

This is one of my favorites

Adorable hor ... !!

And the latest, which I snatched from my other sis' blog :

Future heartbreaker ... :P

Derrick Kwok
I'm a proud aunt of Derrick Alfian Kwok born August 23, 2008 at around 4.30 AM in the morning. Although I am not there, I can feel the love inside the hospital room already. In my head, the new mom a.k.a Cin, totally exhausted but beaming with pride; the new dad a.k.a. Yung, having been present in the delivery room, stressed out but elated to see the newborn; everybody else in the room, excited and trying to lower down their voices. So happy for the proud parents.

One Fine Day
It's Saturday. The sun is shining, the wind blowing lazily, some clouds are hanging in the sky, temperature is just nice (around 26 celcius). People are walking on the streets, many girls wearing mini skirts and shorts. I hope everyday can be as fine as today.

May Bloom
My mom in law gave me a pot of plant some time around October 2006. She had cut this branch from the original plant and planted it in a pot (she had also put a cane-like stick in and tied the plant to it so that it stayed upright). I was told that it will bloom gorgeous red flower but had also waited in vain as two winters and one summer went by. Finally last week, I noticed that one of the stems had sprouted a green bud. I was pretty skeptical that it will actually bloom but yesterday it had become a full bloom of red gorgeous. Funny that I gave the title May Bloom, my mom in law’s name is May.

Poem by my brother
I have just realized that I have a very artistic and talented brother. He wrote the following poem.

awaken by the truth and lies
the perfect time to regain our pride
angels are revealing black wings
as soon as the arrival of the bride

why feed the mouth that should not eat?
by cutting your own flesh and bones so deep
why bother to deal with sadness
for everything you trust are madness

fucking burn the misery
this nonsense catastrophe
stand closer to the light
as other swept away by the night

fucking stand up your goddamn feet and struggle for your own life for the love of god
it's not fucking worthy
you are so busy to find the truth
when you realize it's all lies

I love it and I am so mesmerized by his talent. David ... you rawk!!

The City that never sleeps II

So day 3 was the last day for us to enjoy New York. We were out around 11.30AM to Chinatown for dim sum. Next destination is World Trade Centre. There was a monument erected about the area of WTC PATH station. While there, there was this guy sitting on the floor and playing a musical instrument (a violin or something) and he played the saddest song –like ones usually played at funerals of national heroes- I kept thinking, oy, did he have to keep playing that song, it made my eyes welled up. Later, we rested our legs at a nearby café then walked to Wall Street and since we still had about an hour left before dark, we decided to go to Empire State building which we could actually see from Wall Street. After asking around, we took the subway to 6th Ave. and walked to 8th Ave. We still couldn’t find the building after walking for 20 minutes. At an intersection, John was saying that the building should be somewhere nearby since we had seen it from afar earlier but said that we should probably get going when I looked at the street in front of me and to a building with a tall tower on top and asked “,does this look like the Empire State building?” It was in fact the Empire State building and we couldn’t stop laughing all the way. To our amusement, there was this store across the Empire State building which put a statue of Liberty the size of a human in front of the store and we quickly took the liberty to pose with the statue. Dinner was at Ruby Tuesday on 7th. Food here was good with reasonable price tags. When we were about finished with dinner, there were some commotions in front of the restaurant. We were later told by the waiter that that night gangsters would be roaming the streets of downtown and that it was an annual thing for them. But we decided that it was safer to leave sooner before midnight and still we managed to buy some bread and cookies at the Bread Factory along 7th Avenue.

We were ready to leave the hotel by the hotel shuttle bus to the airport at 5AM when I looked out from the lobby and saw that no car was waiting for us. I quickly ran to the front desk and told the half awaken front-office manager that we were looking for the bus. He quickly paged the driver who apparently had just left a few seconds before we came out. Luckily he came back for us. We reached Toronto around 8.45AM, reached home around 10AM and me straight to the office. I could barely keep my eyes open for the rest of the day.

The city that never sleeps
I had my first trip to New York and I could not have been more excited. Here is the recount of this trip (so that when my memory starts to fail, I will still have this blog to remind me)

  • Good Friday (March 21, 2008)
The flight was at 1.30PM and while checking in my small suitcase, I noticed that I have forgotten to put a lock on the zipper handle. But since it has a built-in padlock with combination numbers to hold or release the zipper handle, I tried to brush off my worries and let the airline officer checked in my luggage. Flight was delayed for an hour and the flight was on a very small capacity plane. The plane had only one column of passenger seats on the left and two columns on the right, and the walkway isle was super narrow. This was the first time ever that I had been on a plane this small. Thinking back, it was scary as the plane shook so much while taxing down ... luckily, I am still alive ... huehueheu. Upon arriving Newark airport in New Jersey and while waiting for the air train to leave the airport, I noticed that one side of the padlock which hold the zipper handle on my suitcase had been damaged. The other end of the padlock, which opened to the shorter end of the zipper track, was still intact. Obviously, someone had break it on purpose to see what I had store inside the luggage. I was so pissed!! More problems arose shortly. The air train, which was the hub between terminals in the airport and from the airport to the train station, was not operating; instead there was to be a shuttle bus to take us to the train station. We had to wait so long for the bus to arrive (do'h).Luckily it did not take long to commute from the airport to our hotel close to Newark Penn Station. I loved our hotel so much that upon checking in, I told John that I wanted to just stay in but fortunately, John pulled my lazy bum out of the hotel room and off we went to downtown New York. As soon as I step out onto 7th and 32nd Street, I was glad that I did not spend the rest of the night at our hotel. Everywhere I looked, there were people walking, chattering, talking on the phone … it was bustling with activities. My spirit was uplifted. We walked along 7th Avenue from 32nd to about 52nd Street, all the while excited and hungry (me). Finally, we settled to dine at Tad’s Broiled Steaks at around 9 pm and even at this hour, the line up at this joint was long and people kept coming into the restaurant to join in the queue. Food was very good and affordable. And the portion here is just nice, it was enough to fill up a hungry me.

After dinner, we hunted for dessert and found this nice place called Europa café along 7th Avenue. Here, besides meals, there were a variety of pastries, cheesecakes, cookies and cakes. The coffee was good (quoted by John) and the cheesecake heavenly!!

I always could not sleep late on the very first day in an unfamiliar surrounding. I was fully awake by 6.30 AM and decided that since I could no longer sleep, I might as well get ready to go out. John was up by 8.30 AM and after a light breakfast at a café nearby; we were on our way to New York, first destination, Chinatown. I always heard and as the result, had this misconception that Chinatown in most cities in the US was not as big as the one in Toronto (except for San Francisco). Being in Chinatown in New York totally changed that. Along Canal Street were shops and stalls and so many people … buying, selling or just looking and walking. Not only that, smaller intersections were also very busy. The major commodities on sale here were fake designer handbags, watches, fragrances and hats and scarves. Here and there, sellers of fake goods were trying to score businesses by calling out to customers, some I found hilarious like one Chinese lady who was asking two guys looking at her trades “ … likey?” or one guy who yelled out “LEE-BUH-DONG!” .. I think he was trying to say “Louise Vuitton” huehehe …After surveying several places to eat, we settled to have dim sum at Jing Foong which nearest translation is Abundance of Gold. A few steps from the entrance were elevators, which seemed to go forever, leading to a large dining hall on the second floor. Dim Sum here was excellent, the only complaint was smaller groups of people have to share tables. We were at first directed to share a large round table with a few others but we asked for a smaller table and was ushered to a square table for four. A couple minutes after we sat down, an Iranian couple from New York joined our table and it turned out to be fun as we ate, we chatted about New York, traveling and stuff. After Dim Sum, we headed to Central Park which the earlier Iranian guy told us that it was a must-visit place in New York. Around 4 PM, we headed back to the hotel to take a nap; I was unconscious as soon as I was on the mattress. Back in downtown again around 7.30 PM and off we went to shop at Macy’s. I was given Macy’s card for my purchase on the previous night and the card came with 15% discounts on first and second day of approval of card. As it was late and the store hour was only until 9.30PM, I was scrambling around to find something nice to buy. In the end, John got his jeans and I got nothing (which was okay since I normally don’t make purchases in just one visit hehe..). Dinner was at Maxie's restaurant around 10PM and inside of the restaurant was still packed with people. Food was not memorable but portion was HUGE. I expected a very cheesy cheeseburger but was quickly disappointed to find only one slice of cheese with my meal, then I kept eyeing John's Classic Reuben sandwich and kept stealing a sliver or two from his plate. After dinner we had plan to catch a 11.57PM train but missed it when we stopped to get some bottled water at a store along the way. As we only had 20 minutes till the next train arrived, we had decided to take the subway to the train station but as luck would have it, we took the wrong subway line and ended up missing the next train as well. In the end, we managed to catch the 1.12AM train and reached the hotel all exhausted.

Day 3 to be continued on next blog …
I carry your heart with me
This poem may be posted a gazillion times over on the internet but I am still going to post it here since it is sooo (oh) beautiful and meaningful. This goes out to all the people I know and love.

“I carry your heart with me. I carry it in my heart.
I am never without it. Anywhere I go, you go, my dear ;
And whatever is done by only me, is your doing, my darling.
I fear no fate. For you are my fate, my sweet.
I want no world. For beautiful you are my world, my true.
And it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant.
And whatever a sun will always sing is you.
Here is the deepest secret nobody knows.
Here is the root of the root, and the bud of the bud, and the sky of the sky of a tree called life ;
Which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide.
And this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart.
I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart.”
- E.E. Cummings

I will remember today
As today, your heart breaks
I have only my shoulder to offer
And our eyes will cry together
I will remember today
As today, my heart breaks too

Light Out
Two months have passed since the last blog. The past Christmas and New Year holiday was spent buying gifts and entertaining. And nothing really notable happened during Chinese New Year. Only as I am writing this now that I recall buying a Chinese New Year decoration, which says “Gong Hey Faat Choy”, which I put up on my foyer wall and this reminds me that I have to take it down.

There was so much snowfall in Toronto this winter. I am pretty sure there were more than 3 days in February where we had at least fifteen centimeter of snowfall per day. I remember going to the temple on the morning of Chinese New Year and as there was traffic jam, I had to walk one block away from the temple to meet John in the car. I was practically walking with my knees in the snow. But I don’t mind the snow anyway. At least it’s not that cold when it’s snowing.

An important upcoming event worth mentioning is Earth Hour which this year, will be on March 29 at 8 pm (local time). Apparently, this movement started in Sydney last year with more than 2 million residents turning off their lights for an hour beginning 7 pm on March 31, 2007. This year, more than a dozen cities have joined in the campaign. Among the cities involved are Atlanta, Bangkok, Chicago, Montreal, Ottawa, Perth, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver. The list is being updated regularly although, I am pretty sure they are leaving out a very important city that has made very strongly its intention to participate. If you know the city I am talking about, yes …. It’s Medan city. Even though Medan is not in the list but I am 100% sure that part of the city will participate in the earth hour come March 29, 2008 … or maybe everyday before this date and everyday after then … heueheueheu

Anyone interested in lending their supports and switch off their lights can visit
